Nisenan Culture is unique and born of geographically specific places. Each mountain, water way, meadow, has a name and spirit. Each animal and plant, a specific identity and family. The Nisenan interacted with all these beings and in service to this geographic place. It’s an ancient agreement that the humans do their part to turn the seasons, burn the land, burn the dead and mourn the passing of loved ones. Imbedded in the language is found the respect and the honoring of these agreements. The Nisenan were a part, not apart, from Nature and all who dwell within.
